Homeowners who are remodeling their bathrooms will not think about JC Penney because there are more popular home improvement stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot. However, JC Penney’s CEO Marvin Ellison wants to change popular perception.
JC Penney plans to expand its home services by testing out six new programs in its 100 stores. In a single trip, shoppers can purchase a GE washing machine, arrange for a consultation for a bathroom remodel, get a haircut at JC Penney’s salon InStyle and buy some new Nike gear.
Later this month, shoppers can expect signs at JC Penney home departments and on its digital storefront that advertises services for bathroom remodeling, home cooling and heating systems, home water solutions, awnings, quick-ship and installed blinds and other smart home solutions.
Ellison hopes that JC Penney can gain a significant share in the $300 billion market. Ellison is very familiar with home services and appliances having spent six years working for Home Depot before JC Penney. He hopes for an increase in sales from both their current and new customers. 70% of the shoppers are actually homeowners.
While department stores are gradually losing the interest of shoppers due to slow mall traffic, home improvement retailers like Lowe’s and Home Depot are enjoying significant sales gains quarter after quarter because people prefer to invest in homes instead of buying products they will only keep inside their closets.
While expansion is not expected from JC Penney, the company actually provided a range of products and services at some time in its history. More than a year ago, the company decided to bring back appliances to capture new demographics and new customers. In its fourth quarter earnings, JC Penney revealed that appliance sales are improving the company’s productivity because of the comparable sales growth.
