United Kingdom’s Home Burglary Decreases

Burglary in homes is one of the crimes that is often on the top ten lists of criminal acts. In United Kingdom, the incident of home burglary was so high in the 1990s. Today, the crime rate in property theft has fallen to almost half. This news is such a relief for most home owners. However, one should not be confident leaving homes unsecured.

According to a study, most of the belongings being stolen are more valuable. The number of stealing might have reduced but the items stolen are reported to be at very high value.

Burglars have become wise these days. They target homes where they could loot expensive items and where money is sure to be found.

Crime rate levels

According to the Office for National Statistics, the level of home burglaries in England and Wales swelled to as much as 1.7 million incidents in the year 1993. Since then, the numbers kept on decreasing. And within the years 2012-2013, the burglary recorded numbered to only 649,000. Two households in every 100 households had their houses broken into compared to statistics in mid 1990s where in six in every 100 households were victims of burglary.

The trend

Today’s home theft trend is that items with high value are stolen. These include among many others plasma television, high end gadgets, jewelries and antiques.

Over the last three years, the cost of items being stolen from homes has risen to an alarming 40 percent. According to a survey, most thieves take away the laptops of home owners. Around 40 percent of those surveyed reported to have lost their laptops. Second in rank are the mobile phones accounting to at least 30 percent and in third place are televisions with reported 20 percent of the items stolen from the British burglary victim population.

The level of home security system that a house has plays a very big role in the likelihood that it will become a victim of burglary or not. A study revealed that the usage of modern and better security systems lowered the burglaries in a neighborhood. Analysis also showed that having several home security devices lowered the chances of being a victim of house theft.
